PHP

PHP is the server-side programming language WordPress itself is built on, along with most of the custom logic on a site like this one. It’s what turns a database of content into the actual pages a visitor sees.

No — PHP is actively developed, with regular performance and security improvements in every major version. It still powers a large share of the web precisely because it keeps evolving rather than standing still.

Not at all. PHP runs behind the scenes; day-to-day content management happens through WordPress’s normal editing screens, no code required.

Plugins are great for well-defined, common needs. Custom PHP is what makes a site actually fit your business instead of being bent to match a plugin’s assumptions — custom post types, custom logic, and integrations that don’t exist off the shelf.

Written carelessly, any code can. Written deliberately — which is the whole point of hand-building a theme instead of stacking plugins — custom PHP is usually faster than the generic, do-everything code a page builder or bloated plugin ships with.

Hosting providers periodically require newer PHP versions, and older, poorly-maintained code can break when that happens. Part of ongoing maintenance is keeping custom code and plugins compatible with current PHP so those upgrades are a non-event.

PHP itself is secure when kept current; most real vulnerabilities come from unmaintained plugins or careless custom code, not the language. Following secure coding practices and keeping everything updated is what actually matters.

Yes — form processing, API integrations, custom search logic, data validation, and anything else a site needs to actually do (not just show) typically runs through PHP.

WordPress predates a lot of newer languages, and PHP’s ecosystem, hosting support, and talent pool are enormous as a result. That maturity is an advantage, not a limitation — it means fewer surprises and more available expertise.

Well-written, standards-following PHP ages gracefully. Staying current with routine maintenance is what prevents the kind of neglect that eventually forces a rebuild.
